That’s amazing, thanks for getting in touch. It’s been a few years now since I did the Beauty of the Dead adaptation (assuming this is what you’re referring to) as one of a number of literary adaptations I was doing at the time. It helped me to find my feet telling stories visually at that time, but it was something I’d wanted to do for a while.
It’s, I think, still my favourite H.E. story, being the first one I read after finding an old copy of The Beauty of the Dead collection of short stories in a tiny library in Suffolk, and, knowing that he was my late uncle’s favourite writer, I was eager to check out some of his work. I then, naturally, had to scour the land for a copy of my own. I don’t believe I’m wrong in thinking the book has been out of print for a long long time? (Which is a tragedy, honestly.)
On seeing more: I’m deeply involved in my own writing for the time being, but if the day comes when I turn to the literary greats for an adaptation again, I believe I would have to think seriously about looking at Love for Lydia which remains in my top five novels of all time and would lend itself sumptuously to the form of a graphic novel. Something to think about.
It’d be a real honour to see it on the H.E.Bates page, too.
